New York State Coalition of Medical-Legal Partnerships (MLPs)

In 2008, we spearheaded the New York State Coalition of Medical-Legal Partnerships ("the Coalition"). Established with support from the New York State Health Foundation, the Coalition's goal is to serve as a mechanism whereby existing and new MLPs can exchange information and resources. The Coalition now consists of 14 active medical-legal partnerships and 40 individual members. We had a very successful statewide conference in June 2009 and have created a list serve to actively engage and support collaborative associations between healthcare providers and lawyers.

An important focus of the Coalition is to support legislation to amend the Public Health Law and establish a statewide medical-legal partnership within the Department of Health. The Coalition plans to build momentum for the legislation, through aggressive mail campaigns to all State and City legislators, and the creation of a statement of support to be sent to health and legal organizations for their signatures and endorsements.

National Technical Assistance Project

LegalHealth has been awarded a grant from The Charles Evans Hughes Memorial Foundation which will allow us to provide technical support to those interested in creating or expanding medical-legal partnerships across the country.

LegalHealth will provide advice and assistance to interested members, including training sessions at national conferences, telephone consultations and providing information on best practice results and materials. Organizations interested in this program are welcomed to visit and observe our clinics and training sessions.
